Foxy lady palm COLD HARDY PALMS

FULL DISCLOSURE…these are not photos of my palms, nor did I take these photos. What’s the difference between the variegated and the green ? There’s been a couple times where large all green forms have been available, but it hasn’t been too often.
From what I understand about F2 hybrids, this result is not surprising. Kind of like a cross between foxtail fiber and the very smooth Vechis fiber. Here is the 5th seed that failed float test. I picked up a few seed that was on the ground while taking pics.
Anytime now the frond on the left, which is against the lean will fall off, and you can see the angle of the newest frond which should be on that side of the palm is leaning to the right. I at least have 2 other Foxy Ladies planted about the same time. I have two good size foxy ladies that are perhaps my favorites. I did notice the dark spot on the side away from the walkway a while back, but it wasn’t really oozing anything at the time.

Foxy Lady seeds for sale- Wodveitchia hybrid

I believe most of the time the seeds never germinate but very occasionally they do. I have some flowering/fruiting foxtails near an adonidia doing the same. I have a couple of completely green ones in my yard and there isn’t a bit of variegation I think it’s better classifies as mostly green or mostly variegated that’s my conclusion

Wodyetia X Veitchia AKA Foxy Lady

By the looks of it, drying and wilting, what’re the odds of a rebound if I get it in the ground with profuse water? I highly recommend that you just plant this. That thing is so root bound that you need to do slow drip like they do or just plant it.
So after a couple weeks of treatment, the remaining leaves are browning but I have noticed some minimal growth (a couple millimeters) of the spear. If you do the 24hr soak thing, put a weak solution of seaweed extract in the water too. This would happen far more quickly for you than it does for those of us in the humid tropics where the plant tissues survive on atmospheric moisture foxy gold casino for ages before the final collapse. That should happen in shade and then it should be shifted up and placed gradually into more and more sun over the course of a month or two until it is hardened and can go in the ground. Do you have a FULL shade spot under some trees or overhang?
Are they the same as an F1 growth rate? I don’t know the different rates of growth for them in Florida. Will the seed look like the one you show above, or is that just the f2? I didn’t notice it until after the seedling got bigger… I have a Butia x Jubaea F2 that looks exactly like a Butia and growth speed is very similar to Butia.

  • Sorry to hear this…..time to edit and replace.
  • Here is the palm, looks very healthy aside from the obvious cold spots on the old fronds.
  • I guess I better start thinking about what I want to plant in it’s place eventually.
  • I’d suggest spending sometime at Kopsick Palmatium in St. Pete.
  • You did not get a palm that was basically bare root and a palm you specifically said you did not want!!!
  • The green form tends to perform better in full all day sun than the variegated which burns more easily especially in hot dry sun.

Are they the first two foxy ladies cultivated??? Sign up for a new account in our community. Number 1 on my personal list of favorite feather-leaved / crown shafted palms so i completely understand the allure / desire to grow one ( …or a few, lol ).. They will feel heavier than the empty seeds as well. When looking at seeds on the Kopsick specimen(s), they will have a look that falls somewhere between those off Veitchia, and those off Foxtails. As far as I know it is possible for these two to hybridize.
If so did they sprout around the same time frame? If there are variegated foxladies, they are obvious. What I have noticed is that the width of the foxylady leaves tend to be a little wider and a little more dark hairs on the leaf bases. @here does anyone have Foxy Lady seed they would like to sell?

Foxy Lady palm

A potted palm, drought tolerant or not, needs watering much more often than one in the ground that’s established. It’s a bad combination for the palm to deal with root trauma and to fight full scorching sun at the same time. I have 2 smaller foxys, and they were sensitive to repotting; it stunted their growth for several months. Also the variegation seems to be a morphological example of hybrid decline as the greens show hybrid vigor.
The only mature ( and flowering /seeding ) specimens i’m currently familiar with are those in Kopsick’s collection. You did not get a palm that was basically bare root and a palm you specifically said you did not want!!! You got an amazing holy grail palm at a discount price.

  • I marked the spear the day it was delivered, and there has been zero growth (I wouldn’t be concerned with that at this point, except that the leaf has now snapped)
  • Boron deficiency has been identified as the cause of palm leaning syndrome.
  • The seeds that Mike Evans germinated were F2, there is no guarantee they will be Wodveitchias.
  • So why does it seem the green is the better choice ?

Hot and dry in summer, humid and sticky monsoon season, perfect weather Christmas time One is variegated and the other is not?? Are they famous because they are the first to produce viable seed? Being in tropical Cairns, they were probably seedlings 3 yrs ago.
Call me anytime to chat about transplanting palms. They say the foxy lady is a rocket but the growth rate appears to be the same as seedlings. The foxtails have been grown in some shade, and the foxyladies have been growing in at least 1/2 day Sun. Yep, I was told it’s the mother plant genes that determine the fruit/seed so you can’t tell an F1 hybrid without growing it! Seed from a foxtail palm will only look like foxtail seeds even if something else is going in the seed. But I have had a foxy lady from came off of one of my foxtails….

Palm Guy

Foxtails that I’ve grown all seem to throw one spear and sit for a long time (weeks to months), at which point they resume normal growth. Apparently when the greenies are much older they can also put out the odd variegated leaf. I ask because I have 3 one leaf seedlings and they all have variegation so I’m just curious if they’ll all keep this as adults /topic/33571-producing-wodveitchia-seed/
So I have been watching this palm I acquired as a Foxy Lady as it has increasing leaned toward the south this summer. Well mine has a sparse seed set that dropped today. If this one produces seed, you should be able to tell if they have a chance.. While the largest would flower & produce seed often, most seed i’d collect were empty or basically liquid when opened.
Lol but really I’ve only heard amazing things from this palm and I absolutely love the looks from it. The hybrid Wodyetia bifurcata x Veitchia arecina. I came across the legendary Foxy lady palm.
The seeds all had 2 white racing stripes. Therefore, you would expect the foxtails to have the wider leaves. Been in pots in the greenhouse for a couple years, very hard to tell. Mine are Veitchia Joannis that we’re planted about the same time.
